logo link Club Makes A Donation To Help Woking Hospice

The Club has made a donation of £500 from the residue of the income raised from our fundraising boxing night. to Woking Hospice which provides palliative care and support for patients and their families living in central Surrey.

The Hospice is conveniently situated in Hill View Road on the edge of Woking town and has ten single rooms for in-patient care. Each room has extensive en-suite facilities and is on the ground floor, with French windows opening onto the garden or patio.

The Hospices exists to provide and promote the highest quality care possible for people with advanced terminal illnesses, and to provide help and support to their families and other individuals important to their care.

logo Club Makes A Donation To The Rainbow Trust

The Club has made a donation of £300 to The Rainbow Trust Children's Charity, which provides practical and emotional support to families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.

The Trust's Family Support Workers join the family in their own home to provide practical support.

They have a respite house in both Surrey and Northumberland to provide a break for the whole family, allowing them to spend precious time together as a family.

Rainbow relies almost entirely on voluntary donations and through the generosity of supporters are able to help around 1,000 families a year.

bushfire RIBI Bush Fire donations handed to Australia

More than £34,000 raised for the Australia Bush Fire appeal fund, set up by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland to support victims of the devastating bush fires in Australia, has been handed over to Australian Rotarians.

Thanks to the unique set up of Rotary, clubs were able to link up with fellow members in Australia to establish specifically what aid was required and ensure that funds raised are received on the ground and distributed precisely where they are most needed and effective.

Dictionary for life : Rotary promotes literacy in Tanzania


The Rotary Club of Arusha thanks to the Rotary Club of Guildford District, UK and
Rotary International are currently distributing some 3200 Illustrated Dictionaries,
costing over 16 Million shillings to all Community and Secondary Schools in Tanzania.

With over 1000 superb colour illustrations that are surrounded by labels with specialized vocabulary; hints on grammar, spelling and punctuation, weights, measures, countries and nationalities with text written in a friendly accessible language, this dictionary is especially produced to incite the interest of youngsters.

The dictionaries are donated to school libraries to help develop vocabulary and better language understanding and also to assist children develop stronger self esteem.

The donation is also geared toward encouraging familiarity with books and promoting Rotary values to the child, the family and the community.

Charlie and Bill Cheque Presentation To Guildford Action

At the Club lunch on Wednesday 7th October President Bill had the pleasure of presenting Charlie McCafferty of Guildford Action a cheque to the value £500.

Charlie thanked the Club for so large a donation which would enable so much.

Guildford Action are a registered charity that has worked within the Borough of Guildford for 28 Years.

RI Foundation logo Members Donation of £500 To The Rotary Foundation

Treasurer Barry Gay has sent a £500 cheque, on behalf of the Members, to the Rotary Foundation Permanent Fund.

This total has been achieved by individual donations from every member of the Rotary Club of Guildford District.

Club Supports Sarah Jouault's – Cycle for Children

Rotarian Sarah Jouault undertook a cycle tour of the Rotary District 1250, from Sunday 11th to Tuesday 13th October, raising funds for Children's local charities.

Representatives from all three Guildford Rotary Clubs met with Sarah as she arrived with her support team at Guildford Town Center on the final leg of her tour.

Our Vice President James along with Kathy and Peter presented Sarah with a cheque to the sum of £100 as donation from our Club for Chase Hospice Care for Children.

Sarah's cycle ride raised in total over £6,000.

logo Italian Job Rally Chose Kids Out as Preferred Charity

The rally started in Turin on 19th October and finished on the 31st October in London, following location’s where the film was set.

This is the 50th year of the mini, 40th year of the film and 20th year of the rally.

Colin Morley for District 1250 entered his original Mini covered in Rotary roundel stickers, one for each Rotary Club sponsor. He received over £1,500 in pledges. Since inception the Italian Job Rally has raised over £2million.

Fundraising BBQ At Pat and Peter's : Sunday 6th September

The weather was perfect and near 100 entry tickets were sold. Together with income from the raffle and bar sales the event achieved it's target of meeting all costs to build a complete bungalow for the war orphan children in a new village settlement.

A lamb was roasted on the spit and good company enjoyed,
old friendships kindled and new friendships made.

crest Members Stage Mock Interviews

Members gave mock interviews to the pupils of George Abbot School on the evening of Thursday 5th November.

The exercise gave students the experience of a job or university placement interview.

Each were given feedback on their strengths and given hints on how to improve their weaknesses.

Danny Moloney BA (Hons) Head Teacher and the pupils of George Abbot George Abbot School give thanks to the Members for donating their time to help in such a useful way.

Hobson’s Choice Charity Evening An Outstanding Success

On Wednesday 4th November the Rotary Club of Guildford District, in association with the Guildbury Amateur Theatre Group, promoted a fundraising performance of Hobson's Choice at The Electric Theatre Guildford in support of The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

Thanks to the work of members and magnificent organisation by our Jane, it was a complete sell out, complimenting the excellent and entertaining performance.

We were joined by the Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Pauline Searle and her consort, plus Trustees of the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Farnham.

Among the audience were 10 residents of Hillier Almshouses Guildford, who came as our welcome guests.

The Evening Raised near £1,500. Our thanks to everyone who made this possible.

Members Complete Sand Cleanup Project

On Sunday November 15th Rotarians Chris Parker, Peter O'Keefe, Geoff Rouse, Gordon Jones, Bill White and Don Raffin spent the morning sifting rubbish out of the sand around and underneath the play structure at Disability Challengers in Guildford.

This finished a task initially started a few weeks ago by Members Don Flack, Philip Cornford and Mike Denley.

On completion and holding aching backs, all adjourned to The Anchor and Horseshoes, for a well earned pint.

Disability Challengers give thanks to the Members for their much appreciated support and hard work.

i.e. Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, Carers Allowance.
Advocacy and support in obtaining services (writing letters, attending meetings).
A confidential Carers mailing list for regular information and a free Carers newsletter.
Information on registering as a Carer with your GP Surgery / Social Services.
Support if you have recently ceased your caring role.

Carers Support, Guildford gave sincere thanks to the Members for this sum which would contribute so much in continuation of their help to those in such challanging situations.

Our Christmas gift Donation To Give Christmas Fun For Local Children In Need

The Club has responded to a call from Guildford Action for Community Care requesting financial assistance for a Christmas Party for local children, aged from 1 to 14, in families of the lowest income group in Guildford.

Gift boxes have been purchased to ensure all of the children attending the party receive a Christmas present.

Guildford Action for Community Care, on behalf of the children, give heartfelt thanks.

Cheque Presentation To Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice

At lunch on Wednesday 2nd December there was the presentation of a cheque for £1,500 to Andrew Cox, Corporate Partnership Manager of Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, from the proceeds of the Hobson's Choice theatre evening.

Andrew gave a big thank you, saying how much they appreciated our support especially in these difficult times where raising monies for good causes is not easy.

Laura Sheppard, Chairman of the Guildburys Amateur Theatre Group was also present and related how much they enjoyed the event, particularly as we had managed to fill the theatre for the first night of their four day run.

The Club has made a donation to the Guildford Action Group for the purchase of turkeys, so that the homeless and needy will be able to enjoy a hearty Christmas dinner.

cathedral Family Christmas Carol Concert in aid of Disability Challengers

Guildford Cathedral : Saturday 19th December


The Epworth Choir with Guest Conductor Katherine Dienes-Williams, performed a Family Christmas Carol Concert in aid of Disability Challengers .

Our Rotary Club members Chris, Don, Gordon and Jane undertook the collection and in spite of the prevalent atrocious weather and the grand finals of 'Come Dancing' on the TV keeping people at home and limiting attendance levels, they still helped raise over £750.

earthquake Members Collect For Haiti Earthquake Appeal

On Thursday 21st January Members helped with the Red Cross collection at Tesco's Guildford for the Haiti earthquake appeal.

Rotary has already delivered to Haiti over 1000 Aquaboxs, 350 water survival boxes, 1700 Shelter boxes and teams of skilled volunteers to assist with the aid distribution and strategic occupational needs.

The Rotary organization has also established a special fund dedicated to helping Haiti’s future to achieve the greatest long term benefits.

Projects under consideration include new homes, replacement hospital, community centres and schools.

Musical Evening For Residents Of Hillier Almshouse

On the evening on 9th February, a concert was held for the ladies at Hillier Almshouse Guildford www.hillierhouse.org.uk.

Brian and Elise have very talented daughters; Wendy (piano), Katy (oboe) and Lucy (flute) put together a lovely programme which encouraged everyone to join in.

Don Raffin as Vice Chairman of Hillier House Trustees, speaking on behalf of the ladies, thanked the performers and also the Rotary Club not only for this evening but also for all that they do for the residents.

President Bill in reply thanked Brian Ireland, Jane Hindley and Geoff Rouse for organising such a good time.

The evening closed with all adjourning for tea, cake and chat.

Puddings Charity Pudding Festival

Saturday 13th February


Over 80 pudding fanciers came to our pudding evening
at the St. John's Centre, Guildford, to raise funds
for the Fountain Centre Royal Surrey County Hospital.

This was followed by a cornucopia of puddings homemade by Rotarians, partners and supporters.

The musical entertainment by Annie Odell proved popular and complimented a fun evening.

Raffle draw Ticket sales, the raffle, table flowers, and wine sales aggregated to raise the splendid sum of £1,500.

At the close of the evening President Bill thanked everyone for their organisational and culinary skills which
all contributed to making the evening such a success.

An experienced crew who can advise you on whether items can be accepted.

devastation The Rotary Foundation : Earthquake Funds

The Rotary Foundation has established dedicated Funds to help aid the multitude of people affected by the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.

Contributions will go toward long-term recovery in these areas through Rotary Foundation Matching Grants.

Rotary Clubs in the disaster zones are identifying the hardest-hit and how best to use the funds to help local families and businesses.

logo 85 Million Children Immunized Against Polio

In 19 West and Central Africian Countries


More than 85 million children under age five will be immunized against polio in a massive example of cross-border cooperation aimed at stopping a yearlong polio epidemic.

Nine of the countries -- Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Chad, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, and Sierra Leone currently have active outbreaks of polio.

The campaign kicked off on 6 March in these countries as well as in Benin, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, and Nigeria. Cote d'Ivoire, Niger, and Togo will join at a later date due to political transitions or elections.

This project has largely been made possible by a US$30 million funding by Rotary International.

logo Rotary Day Polio Challenge Achieved Over £1m

Figures from this year’s Thanks For Life Project. fundraiser event show that Rotary members have smashed through the £1million target.

To date, £1,005,653 has been raised thanks to donations from the public.

All across Great Britain and Ireland, Rotary club members worked with schools, held collections at Tesco stores, dressed empty shop windows with information about polio and reached into communities to raise awareness of and funds to eradicate polio.

Cheques lunch photos
Cheque Presentation Lunch : Wednesday 28th April

The annual distribution of a significant proportion of the funds generated by our Boxing Evening took place at Guildford Golf Club at the weekly lunch meeting on Wednesday 28th April.

Representatives of the major charities, Guildford City Boxing Club and the many helpers were our guests.

Following lunch President Bill had the happy task of handing out the cheques to the many deserving causes.
Among the charities to benefit: Chase Hospice Care for Children; David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation; Rotary Education Project in Arusha; White Lodge Centre; Guildford City ABC; The Guildford Gazelles Ladies Rugby Club; Rotary Foundation; and others yet to be announced.

Thanks were given by each charity in turn to the Club for such magnificent support and by President Bill to those who gave so freely of their time and energy to make the evening such a success.

Club Sponsored Local Youth at Rotary RYLA 2010

The Club Sponsored James Cantoni a pupil of St Peter's School at Rotary District 1250 RYLA training camp over the Easter week 4th to 19th April 2010.

James was our guest at Rotary lunch on Wednesday 5th May when he received his certificate from President Bill.
RYLA is an intensive training programme for community youth leaders aimed at talented young people. The residential course focuses on improving communication skills and effective leadership. Instructors use 'Outward Bound' type adventurous activities as part of the intensive training programme.
RYLA also seeks to provide the opportunity for young people to:
Exchange ideas, opinions and plans.
Learn how to arrange youth and community service projects.
Discuss ways of being a role model on important social issues.
Discuss ways for resolving family, social or professional conflict.
Work closely with Rotary to help and serve others.

The course is held at Woodrow High House in the heart of the
Chiltern Hills near Amersham in Buckinghamshire.

Donation To Leonard Cheshire Disability

Chris Fisher from Leonard Cheshire Disability was our guest at Club lunch on Wednesday 19th May. On behalf of the charity he accepted a cheque for £350 toward a special project.

The charity helps 21,000 disabled people in the UK and works in 52 countries.
They campaign for change and provide services that give disabled people the opportunity to live life their way.

Chris thanked everyone for the cheque and their commitment to fund raising efforts which makes such a difference to the amount of humanitarian works charities can undertake.

Donation To Age UK

Our guest at Club lunch on Wednesday 19th May was Pamela Parry-Jones from Age UK who received a cheque for £500 toward the purchase of a foot equipment sterilizer.

Age UK is the new force combining Age Concern and Help the Aged.

Pamela thanked the Members for their marvelous fund raising efforts making possible this generous cheque which was very much appreciated.

Donation To Surrey Care Trust

At the lunch meeting on 26th May a cheque in the sum of £500 for the Surrey Care Trust was presented to Mark Longson of Wellers Auctioneers.

The Trust is the chosen charity of Mark, who was our highly successful auctioneer at the last Boxing Night.
The Trust’s vision is to transform life chances and aspirations of local people who are marginalised by disadvantage and lack of opportunity or who need a second chance.

A range of different programmes provide education and training, giving a second chance to gain the skills and qualifications they need to transform their life chances.
