Loss of Founder Member Henry Carew

Jesus said: "Whosoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

It is with sadness we report the death of a founder Member Henry Carew. Henry had been ill for some time and passed away during the night of the 12th August. |

We offer our most sincere condolences to Henry's widow Jessie, and their family.

Henry has been an active member throughout his 35 years membership. President in Rotary year 1977/78, undertaking many subsequent Club Council roles. Over recent times Attendance Officer with his red book.

A keen snooker player, winner of District 1250 pairs championship, also serving as District 1250 Sports Officer.

Henry and Jessie were regular attendees at District 1250 conferences.

Always one of the first to volunteer for service duties. On past boxing nights at the old Guildford Civic Hall regularly undertaking cloakroom attendant.

Henry strongly believed in community spirit and took an active role locally, at one time a Magistrate to Guildford Courts, Governor to Guildford High School for Girls and true to his Welsh routes involved in a local choir.

His warm smile and fun sense of humour will be sadly missed.

The cremation took place at Guildford Crematorium on Monday 23rd August, which was so well attended that it left many standing.

Jessie, son Alun and daughter Anne give thanks to the most generous donations made to Diabetes UK.

After the service all attendees were invited to the Tithe Barn at Loseley estate for refreshments enabling friends and family to exchange memories and stories.

E-mail Phishing Scams Targeting Rotarians

Rotary HQ continues to receive notice of E-mail phishing scams targeting Rotarians.

One such scam claims that the recipient has been selected in a raffle for a prize and the recipient's contact information is needed. |
Another claims that a deceased Rotarian has left money to the E-mail recipient to be donated to philanthropic efforts. The sender, who claims to be the executor of the will, then asks for the recipient’s personal information, including a copy of the individual’s passport and driver’s license, in order to claim the inheritance.
Be ever ultra cautious disclosing even the slightest personal details to unknown parties through the Internet.

Crocuses For Rotary Day – 23rd February 2011

RIBI is working with The Eden Project and the International Flower Bulb Centre in Holland to plant purple crocus bulbs from the beginning of October so they will be in flower for Rotary Day – 23rd February 2011.

These purple flowers represent the colour of ink dabbed on a child’s little finger to indicate that they have been immunised against polio.

RIBI challenge Rotary Clubs to set a new Guinness World Record for planting bulbs, requiring at least 322 people to plant a minimum of 5 bulbs each in an hour, in a single location. |
The aim of Focus on the Crocus is for Rotary clubs across RIBI to contact their local schools, residential homes, local councils and other community organisations to ask them to identify suitable sites and, hopefully, take part in planting the area with swathes of purple crocus bulbs in the autumn – this will become an annual reminder of the essential need to continue the fight to eradicate polio from our world.

Rotary District 1250 Snooker Champions 2009/10

Our Barry and JIm have become winners of this year's Rotary District 1250 Snooker Pairs competition.

The photo shows (L to R): Graham Lee of the Rotary Club of Brighton and Hove Breakfast, winner of the Snooker Singles with our Barry and Jim. |
In an excellent evening of snooker at the Warnham Comrades Club on Monday 21st June, Barry and Jim beat David Smart and Ernest Smith from the Rotary Club of West Worthing 2-1 in the closely-fought pairs final.

Whilst Graham Lee exacted revenge on District Sports Officer, Simon Edmands, from the Rotary Club of Leatherhead, beating him 2-0 in a repeat of last year's singles final.

Failure To Notify In Advance Your Apologies of Absence

At the business meeting on Wednesday 9th June 2010 a new policy, proposed by Council, was approved by the Members in relation to failure to notify in advance apologies of absence. |
Such measure has become necessary in view of the problems caused by non notification of apologies when communicating accurate figures to the Golf Club for meal provision. When reduced numbers attend meetings the problem becomes ever more significant.

Effective from 1st July 2010, failure to inform the attendance officer of proposed absence by the Monday evening prior to a Wednesday lunchtime meeting, will result in a member being required to pay the cost of a meal (currently £14), emergency situations excepted.

Rule Change To Bills Balls

Weekly Winner No Longer Enjoys A Free Lunch

At Business Lunch on Wednesday 9th June, Council's recommendation for a change to the longstanding rules for "Bill's Balls" was reluctantly approved.

With increasing lunch costs and reducing meeting attendances it has become necessary to withdraw the weekly prize of a free lunch for the winning ticket holder. |
The rules of "Bill's Balls" (named after a founding member Bill Pollard who introduced the draw) henceforth are:

Initially 40 black balls plus the white winning ball go into the draw bag and the process begins.

Tickets cost £1 which are valid for one draw only.

Tickets are exclusively available only to members attending that day's lunch.

Only one ticket can be purchased by each member for each draw.

Each week a ticket is drawn and the holder gets to try their luck by removing a ball from the draw bag.

If a non winning black ball, it is not returned to the draw bag.

The draw continues over following meetings with an ever reducing number of black balls.

The eventual jackpot winner is the member who draws the white ball.

At the lunch following a winning draw all black balls are returned to the bag and the process starts again.

The income from "Bill's Balls" is distributed evenly between the jackpot prize and Club Funds.

Longstanding Member Brian Haigh Resigns

It was with sadness Club Secretary Geoff Wilson reported at the Business Meeting on Wednesday 9th June that a letter of resignation had been received from Brian Haigh.

Unfortunately over the past months he has experianced increasing ill health.

Brian had been a Rotarian for many years before transfering to our Club in 1992. At that time a most senior officer with British Telecom travelling all over Europe at the request of National Telecom Companies advising on latest developments. |
Prior to ill health an active member of Rotary, the Long Distance Walking Association and a local Bridge Club.

His regular attendance and good company at lunch meetings will be missed.

Here is a picture of the final meeting of the 2009/10 Community Services committee. Absent on this occasion were Roy Jordan and President Bill who had gone off to foreign parts.

Following conclusion of official business all enjoyed one of England's best of evenings, alfresco on Jane's patio. |
The WebEd's thanks to Jane for the photo and committee members appreciation for the hospitality.
