rain Cricket/Boules Evening Turns Into A Social Event

Because of inability to raise sufficient players on the opposing team, the event at the Horsley and Send Cricket Club on Wednesday 17th June, was changed into a boules challenge.

However the weather had ideas of its own, just as boules got underway blustery wind and rain ensued, so all took cover in the pavilion and a social evening was enjoyed instead.

Our guests for the evening were Argentinian Rotarians on a Foundation exchange visit.

Thanks to all involved in arranging the evening, to Geoff for his short introduction on the history of the Cricket Club and to the Cricket Club for their hospitality.

kenya Freiburg Film Evening Became

A Talk On The 2008 Rotary Mission Challenge to Kenya

On the evening of 19th August Rotarians, partners and guests came together for an excellent meal at the Guildford Golf Club, followed by a showing of the DVD made by one of the Freiburg Rotarians of their recent visit.

All went well with the viewing for just five minutes when the computer decided to stop showing the DVD! Despite the combined efforts of many experts the disc drive flatly refused to cooperate.

The computer belonged to Peter and Pat O'Keefe, and as luck would have it, Pat's overhead presentation of her Kenya trip was accessable from the hard drive. Therefore Pat valiantly stepped into the breach and gave us a fascinating talk on the 2008 Rotary Mission Challenge to Kenya.

All enjoyed it and President Bill thanked her for her excellent presentation so professionally delivered at such short notice.

Our thanks to Don for this report.

President Bill and Sue District 1250 Conference Jersey : 18th to 20th September

All Conference sessions and entertainment took place in the Hotel de France, St. Helier.

It was an extremely good Conference which was much enjoyed by all of the 16 representing our Club who joined our President Bill White and Sue.

The speakers were outstanding and two groups warrant special attention. The Starfish Project for training people with the problem of stammering and also for the youngsters especially the young women from Farnborough Hill School who competed in the Youth Speaks competition. On both occasions there was not a dry eye in the Hall. One felt proud of the youngsters, rather than the ones we read about in the newspapers.

Throughout the weekend we experienced a great deal of fun, fellowship, good food and excellent beverages!

Bill and Natalie Special Treat Fundraising Dinner : Guildford Golf Club

On Wednesday 21st October some 50 members, partners and friends had a great evening at Guildford Golf Club and in the process raised over £500 for Rotary charities.

After an excellent meal we were superbly entertained by the singing of the very talented Natalie accompanied by David (Rotary Club of Farnham Weyside Junior Vice President).

Natalie and David had previously wowed the audience at last year’s Cardiff District Conference and certainly did so again with us.

A raffle was organised by Hector Goss with prizes generously donated by Chris Parker. Prilla Denley also very kindly donated one of her lovely paintings of a little boy which was the subject of a silent auction.

At the end of the evening President Bill thanked everyone involved in organising such a good event with particular mention of Tony Marchant who put in an immense amount of work to ensure a successful evening.

Christmas Party : Friday 18th December

The annual Christmas party with some 60 Rotarians, family and friends in attendance was held At Guildford Golf Club with much festive fun and fellowship.

After an excellent meal of beef not turkey, there was a fascinating quiz devised by Bill in which we had to to identify various Guildford landmarks.

The winners were on the O'Keefe table but as they only got 18 out of 30 you can imagine how successful the rest of us were!

Our thanks to Vice President James for organising, Bill for the taxing quiz and the staff of Guildford Golf Club for the fine meal and such excellent service.

Presentation Of Paul Harris Fellowship To Pat O'Keefe

At the Christmas party President Bill had the pleasure of surprising Pat O'Keefe with formal recognition of her outstanding humanitarian works.

Pat is supporter of so many works helping to improve the lives of those finding themselves by war or poverty in a desperate situation.

Not one to sit back, Pat is a believer of going that extra mile, a charity walk from London to the Netherlands to raise funds and even hands on, spending time in Sierra Leone physically helping construct a hospital.

At the presentation Pat, a truely worthy recipient of this 'Service Above Self' award, was overwhelmed.

Sounds simple but the photos were deliberately challenging and had one and all donning their thinking caps.
At the meeting's close Don and Arthur were thanked for giving such an interesting and different after lunch activity and requested to convey our President's best wishes to their President.

Debate Evening With Guildford Ex-Round Tablers Club

On Tuesday evening 23rd February we were guests of Guildford's Ex-Round Tablers 41 Club, at Guildford Golf Club, where we took on their members in a debate on:

"The high incidence of tennis elbow in Chinese rickshaw men is entirely due to the complete absence of aniseed in their diet".
Each team had three speakers and our representatives, Don Flack (Captain), Don Raffin and Jim Connelly made valiant efforts to persuade the audience to vote in favour of the motion. Their team spoke equally well for the opposite of the motion with the inevatable result, an honourable draw.

Chairman Christopher Bell thanked us for coming and for such a well reasoned arguments and our President Bill in response thanked them for such an enjoyable fellowship evening.

All present agreed that we had such a good time that we should do it again.

Ladies Lunch Photos
Ladies Annual Lunch : Thursday 22nd April

Rotary Today

Wives, Partners, Guests and Members of Guildford Inner Wheel were invited by President's Lady Sue White to attend a presentation on the Starfish Project.

It began with a most moving account of how Anne, a trained speech therapist, and previous participants on the course help people to overcome their stammer and regain a more normal life, eg pursuing a chosen career which otherwise would be difficult with a stammer, or reading a bedside story to their children.

There was a short DVD on Trevor Campbell at the beginning of his course. He then spoke to us for about 10 minutes clearly demonstrating how much his speech had improved since the course and telling us of the changes he had been able to make in his life which included starting his own business.

At the close we were able to give them a cheque for £450, comprising £200 from Guildford District funds and £250 from donations from those ladies in attendance and also from those who were unable to be present.

Anne Bright (Starfish founder) thanked everyone for the wonderful and very generous donation which will help set up a bursary scholarship for applicants, of limited resources, to obtain therapy to control their stammer.
