A little detail on what is Rotary They are private Clubs and new members must seek an introduction. Each of the Guildford Clubs hold an annual business lunch inviting along those who have expressed an interest in joining. At other times contact a member of the Club who can invite you along as guest. New members must be senior in position within a local organisation (or recently early retired) e.g.; Director, Head Master, Partner, Branch Manager. Local is essential to be able to attend meetings and help out in the many activities. The concept is to achieve representation from each and every type of organisation within the area to give a true Kaleidoscope of ideas and diverse interests.

The spirit of Rotary is friendship, goodwill and helping others not so fortunate. We seek out the unfulfilled needs of the local community be it hospital, youth, elderly, disabled etc. But Rotary is so much more, by the Club being part of an international body we are able to send help, effectively focused at times of disaster or famine. We promote international understanding, sponsor health, education and humanitarian programmes in third world countries, our only limit is the extent of money raised each year by Club activities.

The Rotary Club of Guildford District organises an annual Charity Boxing Dinner held at the H. G. Wells Centre Woking 'Direct link', 300 sit down to dinner with amateur boxing, raffle and auction raising £20,000 average. The Rotary Club of Guildford hold a Charity Donkey Derby in Shalford Park. Chantries Rotary Club promote an Annual Grand Charity Ball. These are but indicative of the events organised by each Club through a Rotary Year. Club Members give freely of their time to organise, sell and make the events successful to the benefit of deserving causes.

After the weekly lunch, or dinner, a guest speaker address the Club on a topic of general interest. Other fellowship meetings take place at which families and friends are specifically invited, parties/barbecues/socials, quiz/race/theatre nights. Fellow Rotarians are made welcome at all other 32,596 Clubs worldwide. Such guests are a regular feature at Club meetings.

The cost of membership is particular to each individual Club, however the per capita administration dues to RI (of the order £15), also RIBI (at approximately £25) and a small sum to District are uniformly levied per Member on each Club. Dues for Club administration in general rarely exceed £100 per Member. In addition Members are invited to make an annual personal donation to the Rotary Foundation charity, currently equating to an average of £20 per member in the UK.

Here are a few examples of what others are saying about Rotary: "Rotary has the ability to organize campaigns to mobilize support for some of the worthiest causes that exist, and that makes Rotary a precious resource."
Kofi Annan Secretary-General of the United Nations.

"I admire the Rotary promise to solve problems that destroy lives and trample dreams and human potential."
Her Majesty Queen Noor Al-Hussein of Jordan.

"Long ago, Rotary created awareness, and took action with Polioplus. If I could, I would give an award to each member involved in this monumental campaign. You who believe in, and continue to strive to save the world's children from the ravages of polio, are most definitely champions."
Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director General, World Health Organization.
